When I woke up this
morning, we were already docked at Marseille. After a quick breakfast onboard,
we were off exploring. At first, the city didn’t look like much. It was
freezing, and the streets were bare except with the occasional person opening
his store.
Near the inner
harbor, it was a totally different scene. The marina, where we caught our
little white train car that took us up to the basilica high above the city, seemed
to be at the center of everything. The train car (think Disney World parking
lot tram), took us on a 25-minute scenic route along the coast and up steep
hills. From high above, the roofs of all the houses blended together in a sea
of pale red, and the water was an incredible blue. Marseille is exactly how I
imagined southern France to look.
Once we came back
down to sea level, we spent a few hours exploring shops near the marina, including
a really cute antique maritime store, where I scored an anchor keychain for 7
Euros.
We only covered a
fraction of Marseille – it’s a very large city when you look at the map – but it
was a great introduction to these next few days in southern France.
